Introduction

Support was provided to alleviate the burden of the husband and to provide quality care to the service user. This presented a difficult challenge, as we had not provided care on a 1:1 basis within an individual’s own home before.

Our bookings and management team liaised with the social worker, keyworker, and the service user themselves to gather the necessary information needed to build a team of carers that would be experienced and knowledgeable around the needs of the service user. Our bookings team recruited quality staff specifically for the team, working alongside the compliance department to ensure all relevant documents and training are up to date, including practical training.

Care Package Overview

The service user was unable to care for themselves, so had support from her husband during the day. The husband struggled during the night, requiring input from Standby staff. Our staff team worked on a 1:1 basis, seven days a week to provide care to the service user and respite for the husband. Throughout working together, a strong bond was formed between our staff team and the service user, as well as their husband. The husband appreciated the break from being a carer as well as having the option to remain with his wife, rather than her being in a care home.

When the package first began, the service user would struggle through the night, feel embarrassed for needing the care and struggled with the mental strain of burdening her husband. Through dignified working, our consistent staffing team alleviated that mental burden and encouraged as much of an independent life as possible.

Standby have now supported this service user for six months, with a regular rota, staff members have implemented theme nights, for example a movie and alcohol-free wine night, to promote a quality of life and engage with the service user on a personal level.

Going Forward

Staff are continuing to support the service user, providing respite care to her and her husband. There are still challenges as the service user’s condition declines with age. However, our skilled staff team are handling these challenges well, with constant feedback into the social worker and communication with the husband.
